The late Norman Smith, who resided in Rangefield Road, had the inspiration to form the Reminiscence Group during one of his periods in office as Mayor of Lewisham. This coincided with Downham’s official Diamond (60 years) Anniversary in 1986.
Although many families were already residing in the southern area as early as April, May 1925, this meant that folk were nearest to Southend Village to use the electric trams, which by 1928 were beginning to extend along the newly constructed Bromley Road, where there were now shops, then making a left hand turn into Downham Way, the underground power was transferred to overhead lines. This was named The Changeover, and from this tram stop the rails and overhead wires, during the next few months continued its meandering journey to Grove Park.
We wish to thank the Borough of Lewisham for allowing us to have the use of Downham Library each first and third Tuesday of the month to continue Downham Memories which the late Arthur Andrews and his wife Vera, nee Wallis, guided us through from 1988 to 1998; having taken on the task from Mr Mel Wright; 1986 - 1988. Naturally, our thanks go to all who have supported us with their photographs and memories.
We reproduce, on the following linked microsite, extracts from the Downham Originals website which was active from 2003 - 2009. With grateful thanks to Queenie Mortimer for her permission in reproducing it here and to the Downham Reminiscence Group.
